. kristin, welcome. >> reporter: thanks, karen. good afternoon. >> so what are we hearing about this meeting? i know it's still going on. any news? >> reporter: well, we do know this, a source familiar with these talks says that president obama is not going to be offering anything new during this afternoon's meeting. he's essentially going to be saying what he said at the white house last friday when he called on congress to put forth a package that would extend bush era tax cuts for those making $250,000 or less, extend unemployment insurance benefits, as well as stave off some of those deep spending cuts that are set to go into effect. the president is going to make the argument that he believes this can pass through both houses, but, of course, there is a big question mark over that. i have been speaking with republican aides on the hill who say house republicans are really waiting to see what the senate does at this juncture before they weigh in on anything that the president might say during today's meeting. but, of course, we will have to wait and see what actually happens. we're hopin

that threshold is. >> karen finney, i want to ask you about the same question, this ten days business. but i also want to amendment that question or expand it. how much damage did the republicans do last night by blowing up plan "b"? in other words, does that take them out of the power position in the negotiations? >> absolutely. because i think at this point, it's pretty clear that any kind of -- boehner could not get, what? 117 votes. so it's clear whatever happens next, he's not going to be able to rely on his own caucus to make that happen. that means, who do you need? nancy pelosi and you're going to have to get democrats to get something through the house. and so, i certainly think republicans hurt themselves in their leverage and look at the polling, 51% of americans have a favorable view of democrats, 31% of americans have a favorable view of republicans, and i can't imagine after watching what happened last night that those numbers for republicans have gotten better. i imagine they've gotten worse. i think the last thing i'll say here is for speaker boehner, he is in a very weakened posi

, karen fin me and we also have robert trainam, msnbc contributor with senator rick santorum. was this like watching a train wreck in slow motion? a lot of people saying why? why did boehner do this? >> yes. but i think the reason why boehner decided to do this is because he thought he had a stronger hand. he thought going into these negotiations that his rank and file republicans were behind him and that he had his back. when he turned around, nobody was following him. at the end of the day, rep art, this was a train wreck. and this is what i was taught in high school with basic civic class here. when you are a federal legislator, regardless of whether or not you represent a hard right or hard left district, you have to put the best interests of the country first because you, in fact, are a federal legislator here. you are not just a marginal legislator here and the problem is that we have a lot of republicans that understand the constitution and they're not willing to compromise and they believe the compromise unfortunately is a dirty word and i disagree with that. >> can h
